Creatinine is a blood-test value that reflects how the kidney is working. A raised creatinine —or a low glomerular filtration rate— may be due to passing causes (dehydration, certain medicines) or point to a kidney problem worth investigating. In clinic we assess the cause, whether it is acute or chronic, and what to do to protect kidney function.

It's worth consulting if your blood tests show reduced kidney function (creatinine or glomerular filtration rate) or protein in the urine, if you have hard-to-control high blood pressure, known kidney disease, recurrent kidney stones, or if your GP refers you. For people with diabetes, hypertension or a family history, a regular check-up helps catch problems early.

Previous medical reports, recent blood and urine tests, imaging studies if you have them, a list of your current medication and your ID (and your insurance card if applicable). The more information, the more complete the assessment.

Not necessarily. Most people with chronic kidney disease never need dialysis. With early diagnosis and the right treatment, progression can be slowed for many years. Renal replacement therapy is only needed in very advanced stages.

To a large extent, yes. Controlling blood pressure and glucose, cutting salt, staying well hydrated, avoiding tobacco and using anti-inflammatories carefully all protect the kidneys. For people at risk, an annual blood test helps get ahead of the problem.
